401k vs IRA

Reasons why you might want to 401k rollover to an IRA while still being employed. The advantages of IRA over 401k retirement account (401k vs IRA) are outlined below.

You get a much wider choice of investments and mutual funds:

Most employer retirement plans have very few choices of investments. For example, they might have 10 mutual funds for you to choose from altogether.

This is particularly difficult when you are trying to do asset allocation of your retirement plan portfolio since the investment choices of each category of assets will be very limited. For example, they might have a choice of

  • 5 large cap mutual funds
  • 2 mid cap mutual funds
  • 1 small cap mutual funds
  • 2 bond mutual funds

With very limited investment choices, it is hard for you to choose good mutual funds out of every asset class. Most companies only offer a few mutual fund families of mutual funds.  For example, your plan may only offer 5 Fidelity mutual funds, 3 Vanguard funds, and 2 American funds.

To get the best return with least risks, you need to have more investment choices so that you can choose only mutual funds that outperform their peers and benchmarks.

There are now approximately 20,000 mutual funds.

In an IRA, you get to choose among all or most of the mutual funds available.
